Abstract

The appreciation of education is based on legitimate hopes of a better life and a better world. Its reduction to the requirements of the market disguises the emancipatory potentials underlying this legitimacy. Through the notion of semiformation (Halbbildung), developed by Th. W. Adorno, we intend to contribute to the understanding of the neutralization of the educational potential. We also point out the importance of valuing non-identical aspects to the system fir they are essential for a critical, supportive formation process. The non-identical can keep alive the hope that goes beyond the relations of domination and exploitation assumed by the current society.
