Authoritarian Personality and Antidemocratic Personality: Necessary Distinctions
Keywords:
authoritarian personality, antidemocratic personality, narcissism, fascist scaleAbstract
In the study The authoritarian personality, Adorno and his colleagues use two expressions – “authoritarian personality” and “antidemocratic personality” – without distinguishing them. On the one hand, they present theoretical and empirical arguments that allow for the distinction to be made. On the other hand, they sometimes argue that it is a single syndrome, whose dimensions may vary, but still within the scope of a single type. In this way, contradictorily, they affirm a single manifestation of authoritarianism, but provide elements to suggest that it is not a single configuration. One of the aims of this article is to present elements that corroborate the hypothesis that there are at least two basic configurations: the sadomasochistic one, which would be the basis of the authoritarian personality, as well as a greater fragility of the Self, without a specific object towards which to direct aggression, and with a special inclination towards narcissism. Another aim is to defend the validity of the results of this study, which indicate the existence of these types of authoritarianism, against other current interpretations of The authoritarian personality.
