Bolívar Echeverría and Georg Lukács. Critical Theory between America and Europe

Abstract

Bolívar Echeverría (Ecuador / Mexico) develops a non-dogmatic Marxist theory whose central reference point is the Western Marxism. Besides the Critical Theory in general, considers Georg Lukacs—with his History and Class Consciousness—as one of the most important authors. However, altho ugh Echeverria recognizes in Lukacs a significant starting point, he takesa critical distance in front to him. To evince this, we analyze here Echeverria’s concept of historical ethos in relation to their similarities and differences with the concept of reification by Lukacs, and we discuss Echeverria’s critique in connection with the impulse towards a radical critique of ideology [Ideologiekritik]—a central question in the Critical Theory of Society.
