Abstract

The notion of recognition as proposed by Axel Honneth seems to be a promising concept to be able to combine material critique with normative evaluation of society. Thus it follows the original project of Critical Theory. Nevertheless its fundamental critical potential has not yet explored satisfactorily. The aim of this article is to show that recognition theory can be used to criticize capitalism in the tradition of Critical Theory. Therefore I differentiate between the written work of Honneth and the potential of the theory of recognition, showing how the latter is able to make an important contribution to the re-actualization of Critical Theory. Making use of Foucault's thinking I will outline the methodological tools required for doing sociological research following the proposal of theory of recognition as Critical Theory of capitalism.
