The Myth of the "Good Italian". The Anti-semitism and the Colonial Crimes

Abstract

My paper aims to reconstruct the fortune of the myth of the «good Italian» in the international historiography in order to analyze its impact on the minimization of the Fascist anti-Semitism. Firstly, I will go back to the origins of the myth, considering the reasons of the Fascist attitude in French departments occupied by Italian troops from November 1942 to September 1943. Secondly, I will retrace the occurrence of this cliché inpost- war historiography, particularly in the volumes of historians Léon Poliakov and Renzo De Felice. Thirdly, I will observe that also recent studies on this topic did not rectify, for the most part, that uncorrected interpretation. At the same time, I will try to point out that the Fascist anti-Semitism was not shaped according to Nazi racial laws, but on autonomous basis, following a previous regulation of discrimination introduced in Ethiopia by the colonial administration.
