Transition from formal domination of culture to real domination. Capitalist socialization, culture industry and materialization of commodity fetishism
Keywords:
Formal domination, Real domination, Capital, Culture industry, Spectacle, FetichismAbstract
The aim of this paper is to historicize the process of domination of culture by capital in the terms of Marxian political economy critique, theoretically grounding the importance of distinguishing between the formal and real domination of the capitalist mode of production for a comprehensive understanding of the specific forms of coercion and subjectivity it promotes. To this end, a critical analysis of the concept of culture industry and spectacle in the works of Adorno, Horkheimer and Guy Debord is carried out, which enables the understanding of the historical process of effective materialization of commodity fetishism and its extension to society as a whole.
