Abstract

This paper analyzes how the first generation of Critical Theory approached Marxism in the context of the transition from liberal to post-liberal capitalism. It further focuses on the influence of Friedrich Pollock's theses on state capitalism and the automation of production in the theoretical work of Horkheimer, Adorno and Marcuse. The analysis reveals that, far from overcoming the approaches of traditional Marxism in the light of the historical changes in capitalism, these theorists remain trapped in its contradictions. These contradictions and the insufficiencies of critical theory are analyzed from the perspective of the critique of value.
