Abstract

This paper analyzes the constitution of the system critique in Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action. The temporal core of this theory is not the same as in the “old” Critical Theory. Habermas intends to ellaborate a critical-sociological synthesis of Marx's “Critique of Political Economy” and Luhmann's “Theory of Social Systems”. But his conception does not do justice to the concept of critique in the “old” Critical Theory, and does not fullfil his own claim to give continuity to Horkheimer's “Interdisciplinary Materialism”.
